chapter thirteen
I made my way downstairs, wondering about my mysterious gentleman caller. Hopefully, it wasnât Simon, not that he was a gentleman. It probably wasnât a police officer since Howard would have identified him as such.
When the elevator door opened, I saw Greg Wright standing at the desk, camera bag around his neck. I raised my eyebrows. Did he know Daniel and I were just talking about him? When he flashed me a grin, I guessed not.
âHello, Jackie. I hope Iâm not intruding.â
âNo, youâre providing a nice distraction from worrying about Heatherâs death.â
His smile dropped. âI get that. Iâm actually here about that. The Gourmet Channel wants to produce a tribute to run after the next episode of The Clean Cook. Weâre interviewing those who knew her, getting some quotes from people. Since Iâm here, I figured Iâd ask for a quote from you.â
I almost balked. What the hell nice thing could I say about her? Then I realized this was a way for me to spend time with Greg and ask him about his relationship with Heather. Plus, it was a good idea to get my face back on the Gourmet Channel. âIâd be happy to. Let me just freshen up. Where would you like to shoot the video?â
âI thought weâd do it from the crab festival tent to showcase her last event. Although sadly, the background wonât have many people enjoying the festival since there werenât many attendees when I walked here. Mayor Tom is probably bummed. But the sunset should be a nice backdrop, even if we arenât facing west.â
âMeet you there in ten?â
When he gave me a nod, I rushed upstairs and took out my makeup kit, glad the police hadnât confiscated my cosmetics. I refreshed my top knot and reapplied my foundation, focusing on covering up the dark circles under my eyes. I swept on some mascara, some shimmery, rose-colored lip gloss, and figured I was good to go. I wanted to look somber for this recording, not overly made-up. I also wanted to look healthier than in my drinking days.
I texted Daniel to let him know what I was doing and got an âokayâ from him with a following âbe careful.â As I walked to the festival grounds, I worked up what positive things I wanted to say about Heather.
Greg had set up his camera on a tripod, aiming for a good view of the water with the yellow and orange-colored horizon rather than the festival. He was right. There werenât many people around. I counted maybe five on the Ferris wheel and perhaps three kids on the merry-go-round. And unlike at most fairs or festivals, I didnât see anyone eating or buying food. Probably too scared. I felt horrible for all the vendors.
Greg glanced up from his camera and gave a thumbs-up. âLooking good.â
I fought a blush as I took my place next to the judging table. âThanks. How long should this be?â
âJust a couple of minutes. Iâll do subtitles to show your location, so you donât have to say it.
